Walker is a small community in Mono County, California, United States. It is also called a census-designated place, which means it's an area the government counts for population statistics.
Walker is located about 3 miles (5 km) south of Coleville. It sits high up, at an elevation of 5,403 feet (1,647 meters) above sea level. The area's ZIP Code is 96107, and mail for Walker is sent to Coleville.
The town was probably named after Joseph R. Walker, a famous pioneer. He started a big trip across the Sierra Nevada mountains from nearby Bridgeport. In 2020, a large wildfire called the Mountain View Fire caused a lot of damage and made people leave their homes for safety. In 2020, about 704 people lived in Walker.

Exploring Walker's Location
Walker is one of the three communities farthest north in Mono County. To its north is Coleville, and then Topaz. Experts believe that the Antelope Valley, where Walker is located, will see more people moving there.
A major road, U.S. Route 395, goes right through Walker. If you drive north on this road, you'll reach Carson City, Nevada, about 50 miles (80 km) away. If you head southeast, you'll get to Bridgeport, which is the main town for Mono County, about 30 miles (48 km) away.
The United States Census Bureau says that Walker covers an area of about 12.2 square miles (31.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Walker is at the southern end of the Antelope Valley, and the West Walker River flows north from there.

Walker has its own fire department and water services.
Fire Protection
The Antelope Valley Fire Protection District protects Walker from fires. This district started in 1947 and covers about 33 square miles (85 square kilometers) of the Antelope Valley. The main fire station for the district is located right in Walker.
Water Supply
Some parts of Walker get their water from the Antelope Valley Water District. This water district was created in 1961 to help provide clean water to the community.
People of Walker
The 2010 United States Census counted 721 people living in Walker. This means there were about 39 people per square mile. Most of the people living in Walker were White (87.2%). There were also Native American (7.9%), African American (0.4%), and Asian (0.4%) residents. About 9.7% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Almost everyone (99.7%) lived in regular homes. There were 335 households in total. About 21.8% of these homes had children under 18 living there. Many households (51%) were married couples. The average household had about 2.15 people.
The population of Walker includes people of all ages. About 17.2% were under 18 years old. People aged 45 to 64 made up the largest group (33.7%). A significant number of residents, 27.2%, were 65 years or older. The average age in Walker was about 51.1 years.
Most homes in Walker (69%) were owned by the people living in them. The rest (31%) were rented. This means that 67.7% of the people lived in homes they owned, and 32% lived in rented homes.
