Waseda Shibuya Senior High School (Japanese: 早稲田大学系属早稲田渋谷シンガポール校, Hepburn: Waseda Daigaku-kei Zoku Waseda Shibuya Shingapōru Kō) is a special Japanese school located in West Coast, Singapore. It is connected to Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. This makes it a branch of a private Japanese school, found on the western coast of Singapore. The school is run by a company called Waseda Shibuya Senior High School Pte. Ltd.
A Look Back: School History
Waseda Shibuya Senior High School first opened its doors in April 1991. Back then, it was known as the Shibuya Makuhari Singapore School (渋谷幕張シンガポール校, Shibuya Makuhari Shingapōru Kō).
The very first class had 50 Japanese students. These students came from families living in Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand. At that time, the school was linked to Shibuya Kyouiku Gakuen. This group also ran Makuhari Junior and Senior High School in Chiba, Japan. In 1991, this was the only Japanese boarding high school outside of the United States and Europe.
The school started in a temporary building. This building was used by a local Japanese kindergarten. The Singapore government helped the school by leasing a large piece of land to them.
In mid-1991, the school's main buildings were finished. This included places for sports and dormitories for students to live. In September 1991, students moved into their new, permanent campus. This was just in time for the second part of the school year.
A big change happened in April 2002. The school became officially connected with Waseda University. Because of this, the school's name was changed to "Waseda Shibuya Senior High School." This new name showed its strong link to the university.
What You Learn and Where You Go
This school welcomes students who have finished Japanese junior high schools. Students can come from Singapore and other parts of Asia.
A large number of students, about 60%, go on to study at Waseda University. This is a great opportunity for them. Other universities that have accepted students from Waseda Shibuya include:
- Doshisha University
- Hosei University
- Kwansei University
- Rikkyo University
- Ritsumeikan University
The school also holds an annual festival. This fun event usually takes place in September. The last festival was held in 2023.
Cool School Features
The school has special dormitories where students can live. This is helpful for students whose parents might be working overseas. It allows them to complete their high school education right at the school.
The boarding school has 187 single rooms. There are 116 rooms for boys and 71 for girls. Currently, about half of the students live in these dormitories. The other half live with their families in Singapore.
Waseda Shibuya Senior High School also has an amazing astronomical observatory. This means students can look at stars and planets! In 1991, the school started a special program. They opened the observatory to students from local Singaporean secondary schools. This was part of an educational exchange between Japan and Singapore.
