Waseda Shibuya Senior High School is a special Japanese school located in West Coast, Singapore. It is connected to Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. This means it's like a branch of that famous Japanese university, but located in Singapore. The school is managed by a company called Waseda Shibuya Senior High School Pte. Ltd.
School History
Waseda Shibuya Senior High School first opened in April 1991. Back then, it was known as the Shibuya Makuhari Singapore School (渋谷幕張シンガポール校, Shibuya Makuhari Shingapōru Kō). The very first class had 50 Japanese students. These students came from families living in Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand.
At that time, the school was linked to the Shibuya Kyouiku Gakuen (渋谷教育学園, Shibuya Kyōiku Gakuen). This group also runs Makuhari Junior and Senior High School in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. In 1991, this school was the only Japanese boarding high school outside of the United States and Europe.
The founder, Tetsuo Tamura, wanted to create a Japanese school in Asia. He noticed that many Japanese people felt a bit lost after returning home from living overseas. He believed other Japanese international schools focused too much on Europe and the United States. So, he decided to open a branch in Asia.
The school first started in a temporary building that belonged to a local Japanese kindergarten. The government of Singapore helped the school by leasing a large piece of land, about 20,000 square meters. This land was given on very good terms. By mid-1991, the school buildings, sports areas, and dormitories were all finished. In September 1991, students moved into their new, permanent campus.
In April 2002, the school became connected to Waseda University. Because of this important change, the school's name was updated to "Waseda Shibuya Senior High School."
How to Join and What You Learn
This school welcomes students who have finished Japanese junior high schools. Students can come from Singapore or other parts of Asia.
About 60% of the students who graduate from Waseda Shibuya Senior High School go on to study at Waseda University. Other universities that have accepted students from this school include Doshisha University, Hosei University, Kwansei University, Rikkyo University, and Ritsumeikan University.
The school holds an exciting annual festival, usually in September. The last festival was held in 2024.
School Facilities
The school has dormitories where students can live. This is very helpful for students whose parents might be working overseas. It allows them to complete their high school education in a stable environment. The boarding school has 187 single rooms. There are 116 rooms for boys and 71 for girls. Currently, about half of the students live in these dorms. The other half live with their families in Singapore.
Waseda Shibuya Senior High School also has its own astronomical observatory. This is a special place for looking at stars and planets. In 1991, as part of an exchange program between Japan and Singapore, the school allowed students from local Singaporean secondary schools to use the observatory too.
