Watermillock is a small village in Cumbria, England. It is located on the western side of Ullswater, which is a beautiful lake in the English Lake District. This area is famous for its stunning natural scenery.

Watermillock used to be its own "civil parish." A civil parish is like a small local area with its own council. In 1931, about 448 people lived there. However, in 1934, Watermillock joined with the nearby parish of Matterdale.

What Makes Watermillock Special?

Watermillock is a popular spot for visitors. Many people come here to enjoy the outdoors. You can find several campsites and two hotels in the area. The village and its farms are spread out between Ullswater lake and a hill called Little Mell Fell.

History of the Land

A long time ago, the high ground around Watermillock was a deer forest. Wealthy local families, known as the "landed gentry," used to hunt deer there. These families owned a lot of land in the area.

All Saints Church

The village has a church called All Saints Church, Watermillock. It was built in 1881. The church is made from local slate and red sandstone. It replaced an older church that was on the same spot. Today, the site of the old church is where the Old Church Hotel stands.

Memorial Windows

Inside All Saints Church, all the windows are special memorials. They remember different people who were important to the village. Some of these include Cecil Spring Rice and Stephen Spring Rice. They both grew up in Watermillock.

Getting Around and Local Attractions

You can reach Watermillock by using the A592 road. This road runs through the beautiful Lake District.

The Outward Bound Trust

The Outward Bound Trust owns the village manor. This manor is a large house right next to the lake. The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity. They help young people develop skills and confidence through outdoor adventures.

Aira Force Waterfall

Just west of Watermillock, you can find the amazing waterfall called Aira Force. It's a popular place for walks and enjoying nature.
