History of Waubun: How the City Began
Waubun officially became a village on December 18, 1907. Before that, it was a growing community.
Naming Waubun: A Native American Word
The name "Waubun" has a special meaning. It comes from the Ojibwe people. The word means "the east," "the morning," or "the dawn of day." This name was chosen when the Soo Line railway was built in the area around 1903–1904. Many towns on the nearby White Earth Indian Reservation were given Native American names.
Geography: Where is Waubun Located?
Waubun is found in the southwestern part of Mahnomen County. It sits on the west side of U.S. Route 59. This highway connects Waubun to other towns.
Connecting Roads and Nearby Towns
If you travel north on U.S. Route 59 for about 10 miles (16 km), you will reach Mahnomen. This is the main town, or county seat, of the county. Going south on the same highway for about 5 miles (8 km) leads to Ogema.
State Highway 113 runs along the southern edge of Waubun. This highway goes east for about 20 miles (32 km) to Elbow Lake. If you go west for about 15 miles (24 km), you will reach Syre, where the highway ends.
Size and Land Area
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Waubun covers an area of about 0.51 square miles (1.33 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large bodies of water within the city limits.

Waubun is located within the western part of the White Earth Indian Reservation. This reservation includes all of Mahnomen County. It also covers parts of other counties nearby to the east and south.
