Mahnomen (pronounced "mə-NOH-mən") is a small city in Mahnomen County, Minnesota, United States. It is located along the Wild Rice River. In 2020, about 1,240 people lived there. Mahnomen is also the main town, or seat, of Mahnomen County.
Two important roads, U.S. Highway 59 and Minnesota State Highway 200, pass through or near Mahnomen. These roads help people travel to and from the city.

History of Mahnomen
The name "Mahnomen" has a special meaning. It comes from the Ojibwe word manoomin. This word means "wild rice". Wild rice is a type of grain that grows in water and is important to Native American cultures.
Mahnomen has had a post office since 1904. This means people have been sending and receiving mail there for a long time. The Mahnomen City Hall building is very old and important. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special building that is protected because of its history.

The city of Mahnomen has its own school district, called Mahnomen ISD 432. This district serves the students who live in the city and nearby areas.
Geography and Location
Mahnomen is in the western part of its county. It is located along U.S. Highway 59. This highway goes north about 25 miles (40 km) to Erskine. It also goes south about 36 miles (58 km) to Detroit Lakes.
Minnesota State Highway 200 passes just north of the city. This highway goes west about 28 miles (45 km) to Ada. It goes east about 77 miles (124 km) to Walker.
The U.S. Census Bureau says Mahnomen covers about 1.05 square miles (2.71 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits. The Wild Rice River flows through the southern part of Mahnomen. It then flows west to join the Red River.
Mahnomen is also located within the western part of the White Earth Indian Reservation. This reservation covers all of Mahnomen County. It also includes parts of other counties nearby.
