Wayne Dillon Parnell, born on July 30, 1989, is a professional cricketer from South Africa. He has played for his country in all three main types of international cricket: Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I). Wayne has also played for many different teams around the world.

Early Life and School
Wayne Parnell was born in Port Elizabeth in 1989. He went to Grey High School in his hometown until 2007. After school, he studied Human Resource Management at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth.
Playing Cricket in South Africa
Parnell started his professional cricket career at just 17 years old. He played his first first-class cricket match for Eastern Province in October 2006. In only his fifth first-class match, he achieved a rare feat: he took a hat-trick against Western Province. This means he got three wickets in three balls! People quickly started talking about him as a very promising young cricketer.
In 2008, Wayne won awards for being the best under-19 player in South Africa. In February 2022, he was chosen to be the captain of the Western Province team for the 2021–22 CSA T20 Challenge tournament.
Playing Cricket in England
First Time with Kent
In 2009, Wayne Parnell joined Kent County Cricket Club in England for a short time. In his very first match for Kent, he took four wickets and scored 69 runs, which was his highest score in first-class cricket at that time. He even scored 90 runs in the next match!
Wayne left Kent to play for South Africa in the 2009 World Twenty20 tournament. After the tournament, he returned to Kent for more matches.
Other English Teams
In 2011, Parnell played for Sussex County Cricket Club. In 2015, he played for Glamorgan in a Twenty20 tournament before joining the South African team for a tour.
He returned to Kent again in April 2017 for the start of their season. In September 2018, Wayne signed a contract with Worcestershire. This contract meant he could not play international cricket for South Africa for a while. He left Worcestershire at the end of 2020. In 2021, he played for Northamptonshire and took ten wickets in one match.
Playing in Twenty20 Leagues
Wayne Parnell has played in many exciting Twenty20 cricket leagues around the world.
Indian Premier League (IPL)
In 2010, the Delhi Daredevils team bought Wayne Parnell to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He later played for Pune Warriors from 2011 to 2013, and then returned to play for the Delhi Daredevils in 2014. In April 2023, he joined Royal Challengers Bangalore for the 2023 Indian Premier League season.
Other Leagues
- In 2016, Parnell played for Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League.
- In 2018, he played for Edmonton Royals in the first Global T20 Canada tournament. He was one of the top wicket-takers for his team.
- Later in 2018, he played for Kabul in the Afghanistan Premier League. He took 13 wickets in ten matches, making him the leading wicket-taker for his team in that tournament.
International Cricket for South Africa
Wayne Parnell was the captain of the South Africa team for the 2008 U/19 Cricket World Cup. He also played in the 2006 tournament. In the 2008 World Cup, he took the most wickets, with 18 wickets in total. In a quarter-final match against Bangladesh, he took six wickets for only eight runs and also scored 57 runs!
He made his international debut for South Africa in a Twenty20 International match against Australia in January 2009. He became the youngest player to get a national contract from Cricket South Africa.
In May 2009, Parnell was chosen for the South African team for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England. He had a fantastic tournament, taking nine wickets. He was named "man-of-the-match" after taking four wickets for 13 runs against the West Indies. Because of his great performance, he was chosen for the 'World Team of the Tournament'.
Parnell also won the "golden ball" award for taking the most wickets (11 wickets) in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy.
Personal Life
On July 30, 2011, Wayne Parnell announced that he had become a Muslim in January 2011. He said that his teammates Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir did not influence his decision. He thought about changing his name to Waleed, which means 'Newborn Son', but he is still known as Wayne.
Wayne Parnell has appeared in advertisements to support PETA, an animal rights group. He married South African fashion blogger Aisha Baker in May 2016.
