Wayside (also known as Wayside School) is a Canadian animated TV show. It's a sitcom created by John Derevlany and made by Nelvana. The show is about a new student named Todd. He goes to Wayside, a very strange 30-story school.
The series is loosely based on the Wayside School books by Louis Sachar. Some things in the show are different from the books. John Derevlany came up with the idea for Wayside in 2003. This led to a TV special called Wayside: The Movie, which aired in 2005.
Teletoon ordered two seasons of Wayside, each with thirteen half-hour episodes. These aired from 2007 to 2008. The show also played for a short time on Nickelodeon in the U.S. Reruns of Wayside can still be seen on YTV and Disney Channel in Canada.
Wayside generally received good reviews from critics. People liked its smart and quirky humor. However, some critics didn't like how different it was from the original books. The series was nominated for "Best TV Series for Children" at the 2008 Cartoons on the Bay awards. You can find the pilot episode and the first season on DVD.

About Wayside School
Wayside takes place in the made-up Wayside School. This school is very unusual, like something from an M. C. Escher drawing. It has 30 stories, but it was built "sideways." This means there's only one classroom on each floor, instead of many classrooms on one big floor.
Just like in the books, the school actually has 29 floors. The 19th floor is imaginary. It's said to be where the imaginary Miss Zarves teaches. The show follows Todd, a new student, as he tries to get used to life on the top floor of Wayside School.
Every floor at Wayside has lockers, stairs, classrooms, doors, and lights. The first floor has the principal's office and the school grounds. The 16th floor has the teachers' lounge and a pool. The 15th floor has the cafeteria and kitchen. The 19th floor (which doesn't really exist) has a chute blocked by wood. People say this is Miss Zarves' classroom. Mrs. Jewls' classroom is on the 30th floor.
Each floor also seems to be a different color. To make the school even more like an Escher drawing, everything on the floors—like doors and lockers—is placed in strange ways. They can be right-side up, upside-down, sideways, or even hanging high above the floor.
Meet the Characters
Main Characters
- Todd (voiced by Michael Cera in the pilot; Mark Rendall in the series): He's a new student in Mrs. Jewls' class on the 30th floor. Todd often struggles to fit in with Wayside's strange rules. He often gets picked on and sent home early on the kindergarten bus, even when he hasn't done anything wrong.
- Maurecia (voiced by Denise Oliver): A tomboy who always wears roller skates. She has a huge crush on Todd.
- Dana (voiced by Lisa Ng): She's the school's top student and loves following rules. Dana is Myron's best friend and helps him with his campaigns.
- Myron (voiced by Martin Villafana): An overweight student who is very self-centered. He really wants to be class president.
- Mrs. Jewls (voiced by Kathy Najimy in the pilot; Kathleen Laskey in the series): Todd's teacher on the 30th floor. She's a bit scatterbrained but loves her students. She often punishes Todd for silly reasons, like talking in class, and sends him home on the kindergarten bus.
- Mr. Kidswatter (voiced by Kedar Brown): The strict and quirky school principal. He doesn't like doors, calling them "goozacks." He doesn't care much for the students, calling them "What-cha-ma-call-its." He only refers to Todd by his address.
- Louis (voiced by Sergio Di Zio): The friendly and relaxed yard teacher at Wayside. He's the most popular person at the school.
- Ms. Mush (voiced by Jayne Eastwood): The head chef of the school cafeteria and also the nurse. She's known for her funny remarks and terrible cooking.
Supporting Students
These students are also in Mrs. Jewls' class:
- Shari (voiced by Lisa Ng): A girl who wears a smoky purple hooded jacket. She often falls asleep in class.
- Stephen (Terry McGurrin): A boy who dresses like an elf every day, even when it's not Halloween.
- Jenny (Denise Oliver): A girl with amazing blonde hair. She's a stunt performer and dresses like Evel Knievel.
- John (Terry McGurrin): A boy who is always upside down. His whole family are upside-down inventors and scientists.
- Joe (Peter Oldring): A student with a large, orange afro.
- The Three Erics (Terry McGurrin, Peter Oldring, Ricky Collins): Three students who look similar and usually do things together.
- Bebe (Denise Oliver): A girl who is a very talented artist.
- Leslie (Lisa Ng): A girl who uses her long pigtails to do tasks. She often looks angry.
- Rondi (Denise Oliver): A rather large girl who is almost always happy.
- DeeDee (Denise Oliver): A girl who wears a purple dress and has lemon-colored hair.
Minor Faculty Members
- Mrs. Gorf (Julie Lemieux): A substitute teacher for Mrs. Jewls. She could turn her students into apples. Maurecia eventually turned her into an apple.
- Le Chef (Peter Oldring): A former French chef who worked in the teachers' lounge. He was supposed to become the cafeteria chef but was kicked out for being annoying.
- Mr. Blunderbuss (Dwayne Hill): The adventurous teacher on the 14th floor. He often goes on hunting trips in jungles around the world.
- Miss Zarves: The teacher who doesn't exist, on the 19th floor that also doesn't exist.

Todd is sent home again, and the trash compactor starts up. Dana feels like a bad president. Todd sneaks back and helps save everyone from the compactor. Myron finds the emergency shutoff. DVD Release
In September 2007, the pilot episode of Wayside was released as Wayside: The Movie. The first season came out on August 29, 2008, titled Wayside School: Season 1. The whole show is also available on Keep it Weird's YouTube channel.
Awards and Nominations
In 2008, Wayside was nominated for "Best TV Series for Children" at the Cartoons on the Bay awards.
How it's Different from the Books
There are some clear differences between the Wayside TV show and the Wayside School books. For example, the character of Todd is changed a lot in the series. In the books, he is not a new transfer student. While two new students, Sue and Benjamin Nushmutt, appeared in the books, they are not in the TV show. Todd seems to take on the role of the "new kid" instead.
Maurecia's personality is also different in the show. In the books, she is a normal girl who loves ice cream. She is never shown wearing roller skates and is almost always with her best friend Joy, who does not appear in the series.
Arabic Version
Wayside was also dubbed into Arabic in 2017 by Venus Centre. It was called يوميات مدرسية (School Diary) and aired on Spacetoon from August 6, 2017, to March 31, 2018. It re-aired on April 1, 2019. This Arabic version has several changes from the English cartoon. Some features were removed, girls' legs were colored, and there were translation issues. Most character names were changed, the theme song was longer, and the music was different. Also, two episodes, "Todd Falls In Love/French Fried" and "Extra-Curricular Ridicular/Wayside Christmas," were not dubbed due to the channel's and country's religious rules.
