Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A website is like a collection of digital pages, similar to a book, that are all connected together. You can look at websites using a computer, a smartphone, or even some televisions. These websites are stored on special computers called web servers, which are always connected to the internet.

What is a Website?

Almost every website has a main page called the homepage. Think of it as the front door or main menu of the website. From the homepage, you can find links that take you to other pages within that same website, or sometimes even to other websites.

Websites are used for many different things! Some are for advertising products or selling items online. Others are for sharing information, like news or facts about a topic. Many websites also help people talk to each other. For example, a blog is a type of website where one person (or a small group) writes articles regularly, almost like an online diary or newspaper column, and others can often leave comments.

Different Kinds of Websites

There are many types of websites, each designed for a different purpose:

  • Blogs: These are like online journals where people share their thoughts, stories, or information on specific topics.
  • Wikis: These are websites where many people can work together to create and edit pages. Wikipedia is a famous example of a wiki!
  • Search engines: Websites like Google help you find information on the internet by searching through millions of other websites.
  • Social networking sites: These websites, like Facebook, let you connect with friends, share photos, and chat with people online.

How Do You Get to a Website?

To visit a website, you need its address, which is called a URL. This is the website address you see at the top of your web browser. For example, pages on the Simple English Wikipedia always start with "http://simple.wikipedia.org/..."

Sometimes, instead of a name like "wikipedia.org", a website might use an IP address. An IP address is a series of numbers, like "127.0.0.1", that acts as a unique identifier for a computer on the internet.

How Websites Are Made

Websites are usually built using a special language called HTML (HyperText Markup Language). This language tells your web browser how to display the text, images, and other content on the page. Other languages like XML can also be used.

Many people use website builder software to create websites. These tools make it easier to design and build a website without having to write all the code by hand. They often let you drag and drop elements and see what your website will look like as you build it.
