Weldon is a small community in Kern County, California, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a special area defined by the government for gathering population data.

Weldon is located in a scenic spot. It sits at the southeast end of Lake Isabella. The town is about 9 miles (14.5 km) east-southeast of Wofford Heights. It is located at an elevation of 2,654 feet (809 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 2,303 people lived in Weldon.

The United States Census Bureau reports that Weldon covers a total area of about 26.8 square miles (69.4 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land. Only a tiny part is water.

History of Weldon

The community of Weldon has a history that goes back many years. The first post office in Weldon opened in 1871. The town was named after William B. Weldon, who was a cattle rancher in the area.

In 1863, a temporary army camp called Camp Leonard was set up in Weldon. This shows that the area was important even long ago.

Weldon has also been a filming location for movies. Several western films were partly shot here. These include Doomed Caravan (1941), Borderland (1937), In Old Mexico (1938), and Hidden Gold (1940).

Population in 2010

According to the 2010 census, Weldon had a population of 2,642 people. Most residents were White (89.9%). There were also Native American, Asian, African American, and Pacific Islander residents. About 8.2% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Most people lived in family homes. About 18.3% of the population was under 18 years old. A large portion, 25.8%, was 65 years or older. The average age in Weldon was 50.7 years.

Population in 2000

In the 2000 census, Weldon had 2,387 residents. The racial makeup was similar to 2010. About 91.33% were White. Native Americans made up 3.94% of the population. About 6.24% of residents were Hispanic or Latino.

The age groups were also similar. About 20.3% of the population was under 18. People aged 65 or older made up 31.0% of the population. The median age was 52 years.
