History of West Conshohocken
West Conshohocken became an official borough on October 6, 1874. It was formed from parts of Lower and Upper Merion Townships. The area was originally known as Balligomingo.
Because it was next to a river, many mills and factories used the water for power. A successful business called Dougherty Quarry mined a special stone. This stone was known as Conshohocken or Merion Blue. It was very popular for building public buildings. People shipped it by train all along the East Coast. However, the stone ran out in the mid-1900s.
Today, West Conshohocken is close to major highways like I-76 and I-476. This has led to new office buildings and shops being built. You can see many commercial buildings along the riverfront. This development has also spread to Conshohocken's riverfront.
