About West Kennebago Mountain

West Kennebago Mountain is a cool place to explore in Maine. It's surrounded by other mountains and is part of a big natural area. The mountain is known for its role in the local water system.

Where is West Kennebago Mountain?

This mountain is found in Oxford County, Maine. It has two other mountains nearby. To its north, you'll find Twin Mountains, which are about 3,536 feet (1,078 meters) high. To the southwest, there's Burnt Mountain, standing at about 2,938 feet (896 meters).

The Journey of Water

Water from West Kennebago Mountain flows into a large network of rivers and lakes. This system eventually leads to the ocean.

Water Flowing East

Water from the east side of West Kennebago Mountain flows into the Kennebago River. From there, it travels into Cupsuptic Lake. After Cupsuptic Lake, the water goes through several other lakes. It then enters the Rapid River and finally reaches Umbagog Lake. Umbagog Lake is actually where the Androscoggin River begins!

Water Flowing North and West

The north side of West Kennebago Mountain sends its water into Otter Brook. This brook also joins the Kennebago River. On the west side, water flows into the Little East Branch of the Cupsuptic River. This water also ends up in Cupsuptic Lake.

Water Flowing South

The south side of the mountain drains into Beaver Brook. This brook also connects to the Cupsuptic River.

The Final Destination

All this water from West Kennebago Mountain eventually becomes part of the upper Androscoggin River. The Androscoggin River flows into Merrymeeting Bay. This bay is where the Kennebec River meets the sea. Finally, the water reaches the Gulf of Maine, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. So, a raindrop on West Kennebago Mountain has a long journey to the sea!

Reaching the Top
