West Quarter Dome is a cool rock formation found in Yosemite National Park. It's a type of dome, which means it's a big, rounded rock hill. This dome is made of a strong rock called granodiorite. It's located in an area of the park known as Tenaya Canyon.
There are actually two of these domes right next to each other: West Quarter Dome and East Quarter Dome. They look like giant, smooth rock hills.
A very famous photographer named Ansel Adams took a picture on East Quarter Dome. His photo, called Glacial Erratic on East Quarter Dome Showing Half Dome in Background, shows a large boulder left behind by a glacier, with the famous Half Dome in the background.
Exploring the Quarter Domes
The Quarter Domes are found a bit further up Tenaya Canyon. They are located across from two other famous Yosemite landmarks: Half Dome and Clouds Rest. This means they sit high above Yosemite Valley, and are quite close to Little Yosemite Valley.
Rock Climbing Adventures
The Quarter Domes are popular spots for rock climbing. However, getting to the base of these domes can be quite a challenge! The path to reach them is known for being difficult.
One very well-known climbing path on the Quarter Domes is called The North Face. This route was first climbed in 1962 by two famous climbers, Yvon Chouinard and Tom Frost. They were among the first to successfully climb this challenging part of the dome.
