In 2000, there were 2,947 people living here. Most of the people living in West Sharyland were of Hispanic or Latino background, making up about 98% of the population.

Growth and Development
West Sharyland has grown a lot because of changes in the economy. One big reason for its growth was the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This agreement made trade easier between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The area has also become a popular place for people to live who work in nearby cities like McAllen and Mission. These people often have jobs that require a lot of education, like office workers or professionals. In 1998, a study found that the McAllen-Mission area was one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States.

Some of the elementary schools for students in the Mission CISD part are Cantu, Cavazos, and Waitz elementary schools in Alton. These students then go to Alton Memorial Junior High School and Mission High School in Mission.
Students in the La Joya ISD part go to Kika de la Garza Elementary School, Memorial Middle School, and Palmview High School.
Famous People from Sharyland
Several interesting people have connections to Sharyland:
He was the person who founded Sharyland. He also helped start the citrus fruit industry in the Rio Grande Valley. His daughter, Marialice, married Allan Shivers, who became the Governor of Texas.
- John J. Conway
He bought the land that would become Sharyland from the Catholic Church. He later sold much of it to John Shary. Conway was important in building a system to bring water to local farms. He also founded the city of Mission, Texas. A lot of the area known as Sharyland is actually inside Mission's city limits.
He was born in Sharyland and went to Sharyland High School. Bentsen served as a Senator for Texas for four terms. He also ran for Vice President of the United States. From 1993 to 1994, he worked for President Bill Clinton as the Secretary of the Treasury, which is a very important job in the government.
After running for president three times and not winning, Bryan moved to Sharyland in 1908. He lived there with his wife until 1913. Then, President Woodrow Wilson asked him to be the Secretary of State. After leaving that job in 1915, Bryan sold his house in Sharyland and moved to Florida. He became very famous shortly before he died because of a court case called the "Scopes Trial". In this trial, he argued against teaching evolution in schools.
