History of West Winfield
West Winfield has an interesting past. One of the first schools in the area, the West Winfield Academy (also known as Mt. Markham), was started in 1850.
For many years, there was a large tannery in the village. A tannery is a place where animal hides are processed to make leather. This tannery was last run by the Hiteman Leather Company.
A special old building in the village, the Bonfoy–Barstow House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
Geography and Location
West Winfield covers a total area of about 2.36 square kilometers (or 0.91 square miles), and all of this area is land.
A branch of the Unadilla River flows right through the village. The Unadilla River is a smaller river that eventually joins the larger Susquehanna River.
The village is located on U.S. Route 20, which is also known as Main Street. It's also where New York State Route 51 (South Street) meets U.S. Route 20.
- U.S. Route 20 goes east about 11 miles to Richfield Springs.
- It goes west about 3 miles to Bridgewater.
- New York State Route 51 goes south about 12 miles to Burlington Flats.

The village is part of the Mt. Markham Central School District. The Mt. Markham Middle School is located right in the village. However, the high school and elementary school are just outside the village, but still within the town of Winfield.
