Winfield is a small town located in Herkimer County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 2,086 people lived there. The town is named after a famous military leader, General Winfield Scott. It is in the southwestern part of Herkimer County, just south of the city of Utica.

History of Winfield
The first people to settle in the Winfield area arrived around 1789. Most of these early settlers came from the New England region. The town of Winfield was officially created in 1816. It was formed by combining parts of three other towns: Richfield and Plainfield (which are in Otsego County), and Litchfield (which is in Herkimer County).
Geography of Winfield
Winfield covers a total area of about 61.3 square kilometers (about 23.7 square miles). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.03 square kilometers (0.01 square miles), is water.
The southern edge of Winfield and part of its western edge form the border with Otsego County. The rest of the western border is shared with Oneida County.
The East Branch of the Unadilla River flows through the town from the northeast to the southwest. Winfield Creek also flows into the Unadilla River near the village of West Winfield. The Unadilla River eventually joins the Susquehanna River. The northeastern part of Winfield has streams like Steele Creek that flow into the Mohawk River, which is part of the Hudson River system. This means water from Winfield flows to two different major river systems!
U.S. Route 20, a major highway, crosses the southern part of the town. For a short distance, it shares the road with New York State Route 51.

- West Winfield – This is the main village in the town, located on US-20, close to the western town line.
