Litchfield is a small town located in Herkimer County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,513 people lived there. The town gets its name from Litchfield, Connecticut, because some of the first people to settle here came from that city.
Litchfield is in the southwestern part of Herkimer County. It is located southeast of the city of Utica.

The first people began to settle in the area around 1786, near a place called Wheelocks Hill.
Founding the Town
The town of Litchfield was officially created in 1796. It was formed from a part of another town called German Flatts. Later, in 1816, a section of Litchfield was used to create the town of Winfield.
Litchfield in Pop Culture
You might have heard of "Litchfield Penitentiary" from the Netflix TV show Orange Is the New Black. This fictional women's prison is set in a place called Litchfield. However, it's important to remember that this prison is not real and is only part of the TV show.
