A Look at Westlake's History
Westlake was created as part of a big building project. This project was called the Hooker Centenary Project. It started in 1959. Westlake and nearby suburbs like Jindalee are known as the Centenary Suburbs.
Westlake got its official name on January 8, 1973. Its borders were set on August 11, 1975. The suburb is named after a lake built during the project.
Some of the land that became the Centenary Suburbs was once part of the Wolston Estate. This estate had 54 farms. It was put up for sale in 1901.
Over time, the local government areas changed. In 1879, the Yeerongpilly Division was formed. Later, parts of it became the Sherwood Division. In 1925, the Shire of Sherwood joined the City of Brisbane.
Westlake has many properties along the river. In the early 1990s, the area grew to include Westlake Waters. This new part has "natural lakes."
As more homes were built, people started to care more about nature. In the 1990s, groups formed to protect the riverfront bushland. They wanted to keep the natural areas safe. Some of these groups were Save Our Riverfront Bushland (1991) and Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group (1993).
