Rural Living

Outside of the university campus, Pinjarra Hills is mostly a rural residential area. This means you'll find homes spread out on larger blocks of land, giving the suburb a peaceful, country feel. The main roads that go through the suburb are Moggill Road and Mount Crosby Road.

A Look at Pinjarra Hills' Past

The suburb of Pinjarra Hills got its name from Pinjarra Road, which runs through it. However, no one is quite sure where the road's name originally came from!

The Mayne Family's Gift

Back in the 1860s, a man named Patrick Mayne bought the land that is now the University of Queensland campus. After he passed away, his son William inherited it. When William died in 1922, his brother, Dr James O'Neil Mayne, and his sister, Miss Mary Emelia Mayne, became the owners.

In 1923, the Mayne siblings generously gave this land to the University of Queensland. Their goal was to help the university teach more about agriculture, which is farming and raising animals. The land became known as the Moggill Farm.

Changes at the University Farm

Around the year 2000, the university started planning to move its agriculture and animal studies to its new Gatton campus, which already had its own farm. This made the future of the Moggill Farm unclear.

There were some rumors that the university might sell the land for new houses, which caused a lot of discussion and protest from the community. However, in 2008, the university said these rumors were not true. They explained that the idea of selling the land was just something students had discussed in a class project. The university did not share its actual plans for the site at that time.
