The Whig Party is a political group in England. It was started to bring back the ideas of an older political party called the Whigs. The original Whigs were active in the United Kingdom from 1678 to 1868.

Waleed Ghani leads the new Whig Party. He started it in October 2014. The party follows an idea called Whiggism, which was the main belief of the old Whigs.

The Whig Party's Journey

Waleed Ghani and Felicity Anscomb applied to officially register the Whig Party. They did this with the Electoral Commission on May 27, 2014. The Electoral Commission is a group that makes sure elections are fair.

The Whig Party officially became a registered political party on September 15, 2014. The Electoral Commission lists Waleed Ghani as the party's leader. Felicity Anscomb is listed as the treasurer, who handles the party's money. Ghani started the party because he felt there was a missing voice in British politics.

In December 2014, Waleed Ghani was interviewed on a BBC show. The party also received support from other Whig groups in America. When the party first started, it did not have specific policies. Instead, it focused on a set of values. These values included human rights, love of country, and diversity. For diversity, they even used the Swedish word mångfald.

In early 2015, the Whig Party worked with another party called Something New. They agreed to support each other's candidates. This meant they would not run against each other in the same areas during elections.

Whig Party Ideas and Policies

On March 31, 2015, the Whig Party shared their plans for the 2015 general election. These plans are called a manifesto. The party supports staying in the European Union. They also support people moving into the country (immigration).

The Whig Party believes in universal childcare for children aged two to four. This means all families would get help with childcare costs. They also want to get rid of student tuition fees. These are the fees students pay to go to university. The party also works to protect the rights of people who rent homes in the United Kingdom. They also support women's rights and human rights around the world.

Later Elections

After the 2016 vote on whether the UK should stay in the European Union, the party supported staying. However, they later announced they would not have candidates in the 2017 general election. They also did not have candidates in the 2019 general election. The party is still officially registered as of March 2024.
