About the White-winged Potoo
The white-winged potoo belongs to a family of birds called Nyctibiidae. For a while, another bird called the Andean potoo was thought to be the same species. However, scientists found differences in their size, feathers, calls, and where they live. This showed they are actually separate species. The white-winged potoo is currently considered a single species. But some scientists think the birds living in the Amazon might be a different species on their own.
What Does It Look Like?
The white-winged potoo comes in two forms, or types, that look almost the same but are very different in size. The bird is about 24 to 29 centimeters (9.4 to 11.4 inches) long. The Amazonian form is smaller, weighing about 77 to 85 grams (2.7 to 3 ounces). The weight of the eastern form is not yet known, but it is much larger.
Both forms of the bird are dark brown on top and a lighter brown underneath. Both parts have darker speckles, which are like tiny dots. The bird gets its name from a large white patch on its wing feathers. This white patch is easy to spot and helps identify the species.
Where Do White-winged Potoos Live?
The Amazonian form of the white-winged potoo has been seen in different places across the Amazon basin. These areas include eastern Venezuela, eastern Peru, the Guianas, and northern Brazil. It probably lives throughout this whole region. It prefers to live high up in the trees of mature rainforests. This includes forests that grow on white-sand soils.
In the early 2000s, researchers also saw these birds along the Amazon River. They were found in areas with poor, non-sandy soils between the white-sand forests. The eastern form of the white-winged potoo lives in a much smaller area in Brazil. It is found in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo. This form is not as well known, but it is believed to live in the treetops of the Atlantic Forest.

How They Find Food
The white-winged potoo is a nocturnal bird, meaning it is active at night. It hunts for insects by waiting on an open branch. When it sees an insect flying by, it quickly flies out to catch it. This hunting method is called "sallying."
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Scientists do not know much about how the white-winged potoo reproduces. However, it is thought that they lay one egg on a branch high up in the trees. This is similar to how other potoo birds lay their eggs.
What Do They Sound Like?
The song of the Amazonian white-winged potoo is described as a "feeeoooooo." It slowly goes down in pitch and sounds very pure. People often say it sounds haunting and a bit sad. This bird also makes a soft "bweep" call.
Conservation Status
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has listed the white-winged potoo as a species of "Least Concern." This means it is not currently in danger of disappearing. However, its total population size is unknown. Scientists believe the number of these birds is decreasing. In the Amazon region, the biggest threat to these birds is the ongoing destruction of their natural forest homes.
