William Elisha Haynes (born October 19, 1829 – died December 5, 1914) was an important American figure. He was a veteran of the Civil War. Later, he served as a U.S. Representative for Ohio. He held this position for two terms, from 1889 to 1893. William Haynes was also a cousin of another politician, George William Palmer.
Early Life and First Jobs
William Elisha Haynes was born in Hoosick Falls, New York. When he was about 10 years old, in 1839, his family moved to Ohio. They settled in a town then called Lower Sandusky, which is now known as Fremont.
He went to local schools as a child. After school, he learned the trade of a printer. He worked at newspapers like the Sandusky Clarion and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
In 1848 and 1849, William Haynes worked on a steamboat. He was a clerk on a ship that traveled on Lake Superior. From 1850 to 1856, he worked in business in Fremont. He also served as the auditor for Sandusky County, Ohio, from 1856 to 1860. An auditor checks financial records.
Serving in the Civil War
The American Civil War began in 1861. William Haynes joined the Union Army as a private on April 16, 1861. He was part of the Eighth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
He quickly became a captain. He fought in battles in western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. He also served with the Army of the Potomac. In November 1862, he was promoted again. He became a lieutenant colonel in the Tenth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He served with this unit in the Army of the Cumberland. He left the army with honor in 1864.
After the war, he worked for the government. From 1866 to 1867, he collected internal revenue for Ohio's ninth district. He then went back to working in business from 1866 to 1873. After that, he worked in banking from 1873 until his death in 1914.
William Haynes was also involved in politics. He was chosen to represent his party at the Democratic National Convention in 1880 and 1884. These conventions are where political parties choose their candidates for president.

William Haynes was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the Fifty-first and Fifty-second Congresses. His terms were from March 4, 1889, to March 3, 1893.

Later Life and Legacy
After his time in Congress, William Haynes returned to Fremont, Ohio. He continued his work in banking. He worked in this field until he passed away on December 5, 1914. He was 85 years old.
He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery (Fremont, Ohio). William Haynes married Maria H. Harmon of Fremont on February 8, 1855. They had three children: Julia M., William P., and George W. Haynes.
