Benyaurd's Military Journey
Benyaurd was a very smart student. He graduated from West Point, a famous military school, in 1863. He was one of the top students in his class. After graduating, he immediately became a first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. This group helps build important things like bridges and forts.
Bravery in the Civil War
In August 1864, Benyaurd was given a temporary higher rank, called a "brevet captain." This was for his "gallantry and meritorious service" during the fighting near Richmond, Virginia. This means he showed great courage and did excellent work.
In April 1865, he earned another temporary promotion, this time to "brevet major." This was for his heroic actions during the Battle of Five Forks. For the same brave actions, he received the Medal of Honor on September 7, 1897. This is the highest award a soldier can get for bravery.
Later Career and Spanish-American War
Benyaurd continued to serve in the army. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1889. During the Spanish–American War, which happened in 1898, he was in charge of important defenses. He managed underwater mines in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, Florida. These mines were used to protect the coast from enemy ships. He also commanded the defenses along the St. John River in Florida.
Benyaurd died while still serving in the army in 1900. He is buried at the West Point Cemetery, a special place where many military heroes are laid to rest.
