A Look at Williams' Past

Williams became an official city in 1922. It grew because of the Minnesota and Manitoba Railroad. The railroad helped Williams become a place where timber products, like wood, were shipped out.

The city got its name from two people, William Mason and George Williams. They followed the railroad tracks in 1901 to claim land where the city now stands. Williams got its first post office in 1903, and William H. Dure was the first postmaster.

In 1910, a big fire called the Baudette Fire of 1910 burned down Williams. But the people of Williams worked hard and rebuilt their city after the fire.
