History of Williamson
Williamson started out as a coal town. This means that many people who lived there worked in coal mines. The village got its name from John and Matthew Williamson, who were the first owners of the land where the village was built.
Williamson's Geography
Williamson is located in a part of Illinois that is mostly flat.
- To the south, it shares a border with the village of Livingston.
- To the north, it is next to Macoupin County.
- A major highway, Interstate 55, runs just east of the village. You can get to Williamson from Exit 37 in Livingston.

The village of Williamson covers about 1.2 square miles (3.1 square kilometers) of land. A small part of this area, about 0.05 square miles (0.13 square kilometers), is water. Water from the village flows into small streams that lead to Silver Creek. Silver Creek then flows into the Kaskaskia River.
