What is the History of Wimblington?
How did Wimblington get its name?
The name 'Wimblington' is very old! It was first written down around the year 975. Back then, it was called Wimblingetune. This old name means "the town or settlement of Winebald's people." So, the village is named after a person named Winebald and their community.
When did Wimblington become its own parish?
For a long time, Wimblington was a small part, or hamlet, of a larger area called Doddington parish. But in 1874, Wimblington became its own separate parish. This was a big step for the village!
On May 15, 1874, a brand new church called St Peter's was opened. This beautiful church was designed by a famous architect named Thomas Henry Wyatt.
How has Wimblington changed over time?
The village is actually split into two main parts. A smaller area called Eastwood End is separated from the main village. The A141 road runs between them. Long ago, a railway line also divided these two parts. This was the Great Eastern Railway line that connected March and Chatteris. The Wimblington railway station was an important stop, but it closed down in 1967.
What awards has Wimblington won?
Wimblington is very proud of its community and how well it looks after itself. The village has won the Cambridgeshire Times and Wisbech Standard "Best Kept Village" award nine times! That's a lot of wins!
In 1997, Wimblington even came second in the "National Village of the Year" competition. The village, along with Stonea, also won the Fenland Section of the Calor Village of the Year competition in both 2002 and 2003.
In 2003, Wimblington and Stonea won the Cambridgeshire section too. This achievement was celebrated with the Fairhaven Trophy, presented by Lord Fairhaven of Anglesey Abbey. That same year, Wimblington and Stonea were chosen as one of 40 villages across England and Wales to compete in the Village of the Year final. They won the Youth Section for the East of England and the Home Counties, showing how strong their youth community is.
What is the War Memorial in Wimblington?
In 2005, the community worked hard to raise money to fix up the village's War Memorial. This special memorial, made of Italian marble, is located in St Peter's churchyard. It honors those from the village who served in wars.
The memorial was rededicated just before Remembrance Sunday in 2005. This was a very important year because it marked 60 years since the end of World War II.
During the refurbishment, a name was removed from the memorial after much discussion. The name was Percy Bush Cox. He was thought to have gone "missing in action" during World War I. However, it was later discovered that Percy was still alive in 1950 and was reunited with his family. A photo of him pointing at his name on the memorial with his father and brother was even published in local newspapers.
