Wimzie's House is a fun Canadian TV show for kids. It's about a friendly monster girl named Wimzie and her family and friends. The show uses puppets, like Sesame Street, to tell stories and teach important lessons. It first aired in Montreal, Canada, in 1995.

The show was first shown in French as La Maison de Ouimzie on Télévision de Radio-Canada and Radio-Québec. Later, it came to English TV on CBC Television in 1996. In the United States, it was shown on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) from 1997 to 2003.

About Wimzie's House

The show was made by a company called Cinar. Later, this company became Cookie Jar Entertainment. The show's puppets look a lot like those from Sesame Street. This led to some discussions with The Jim Henson Company in 2000 about how similar they looked.

There were also two computer games based on the show. You could watch reruns of Wimzie's House on Treehouse TV from 1999 to 2005.

What the Show is About

The main idea of Wimzie's House is simple and sweet. Wimzie is a young monster girl who lives with her family. Her parents are Rousso and Graziella. She also lives with her grandma, Yaya, and her baby brother, Bo.

In each episode, Wimzie's friends come over to play. They often run into a problem or a challenge. Through their play and adventures, they learn important lessons. The show usually includes two songs that help explain the moral of the story. The main group of eight characters is always at the center of the fun.

Meet the Characters

The characters in Wimzie's House are a mix of different friendly monsters. Here are the main characters you'll meet (the voices listed are for the English version of the show):

  • Wimzie (voiced by Sonja Ball) - Wimzie is the main character. She's a five-year-old monster who looks like a mix of a dragon and a bird. She has yellow-orange skin, purple hair in pigtails, and red wing-like antlers. Wimzie starts each episode and sings many solo songs, like "When There's A Job To Do" and "Be Exactly Who You Are." She loves her baby brother, Bo.
  • Rousso (voiced by Tyrone Benskin) - Rousso is Wimzie's dad. He's a calm, orange-skinned dragon with blond hair. Rousso works as a firefighter. When he's not working, he likes to relax. He's a very kind and caring dad.
  • Graziella (voiced by Jennifer Seguin) - Graziella is Wimzie's mom. She's a pink-skinned bird with blond hair styled in a beehive. Graziella is a pilot, so she's sometimes away from home. When she's around, she loves spending time with the children and giving them good advice.
  • Bo (voiced by Liz MacRae) - Bo is Wimzie's baby brother. He's a full dragon, unlike Wimzie. Bo is still learning to talk, so he mostly makes baby sounds. He gets a lot of attention from Yaya and the other characters. He's usually around 12 to 18 months old.
  • Yaya (voiced by Jane Woods) - Yaya is Wimzie's grandmother and Graziella's mother. She's 150 years old but has lots of energy! Yaya runs a daycare in Wimzie's house. She has lavender skin and colorful hair. Yaya often gives the kids advice and can even make a loud foghorn sound to get everyone's attention!
  • Jonas (voiced by Thor Bishopric) - Jonas is a five-year-old goblin who loves science. He has green skin, purple hair, eyeglasses, and wears a propeller cap. Jonas collects dirt and often says, "It's very scientific!" He is Loulou's older brother.
  • Loulou (voiced by Holly Gauthier-Frankel) - Loulou is Jonas's three-and-a-half-year-old sister. She wants to be like the older kids but isn't quite ready. Loulou can understand Bo's baby talk. She has yellow-green skin, purple hair, and wears eyeglasses. Loulou sings songs like "When I'm Scared" and "I wanna be Big Right Now."
  • Horace (voiced by Bruce Dinsmore) - Horace is a four-year-old ogre. He's strong but can get angry easily. Horace is always asking questions and learning new things. He has light blue skin and straight orange hair. Horace often starts his sentences by saying, "Uh/um...question."

About the Puppets

In 2000, there was a discussion between Cinar, the company that made Wimzie's House, and The Jim Henson Company, which created The Muppets. The Jim Henson Company felt that the puppets in Wimzie's House looked too much like their own famous Muppet characters.

They worked things out in a private agreement. This allowed Wimzie's House to keep showing episodes and selling toys and other items. The agreement also helped make sure that future puppet shows from Cinar would look different from the Muppets. This was good news for fans, as it meant Wimzie's House could continue to be enjoyed by many children around the world.
