History of Windsor
Windsor was first set up as a private area for homes around 1876 by George Baker. By that same year, the town already had a store. A school and a church were built by 1878. The church was originally a Primitive Methodist Church. Later, it became a Uniting Church. The last church service in that building was held on October 25, 2020.
Community Buildings
In 1884, the Windsor Institute was built. This building has been used by the community for over 130 years. It served as a hall for events and a library where people could read books.
Past Services
Windsor used to have its own post office. It opened in 1877 and closed in 1982. There was also a store that operated from 1877 until 1985. Both of these services closed after the main road was built to go around the town. The Windsor School also closed its doors in 1971.
Sports and Recreation
Windsor had an oval with a concrete cricket pitch. This oval was across from the school on Windsor Road. It was used by the Windsor Cricket Club starting in 1883. The school also used the oval until the 1960s.
Local Sports Teams
The town also had tennis courts. A tennis club started in the 1880s. The local football team joined with a team from Wild Horse Plains in 1921. They formed a new team called "United." The school and the local football team both wore double blue colors.
Farming in Windsor
The land around Windsor was first used for sheep grazing in the mid-1800s. George Baker bought land in the area in 1860. After the land was measured and sold, settlers started mixed farms. This means they grew different crops and raised various animals.
Farm Products
Until the 1970s, farmers in Windsor grew grain. They also raised lambs, pigs, and poultry. Farmers produced eggs and cream too. In the early days, grain was taken to Parham. From there, it was sent to Adelaide. There was even a special type of butter called "Windsor Separator" brand. The machine used to make this butter is still kept by members of the Clark family.
