The town grew a lot after the Winslow Tunnel was finished. This tunnel helped the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway (Frisco) trains travel through the steep Boston Mountains. On August 3, 1881, the town was renamed Winslow. This was to honor Edward F. Winslow, who was the president of the Frisco Railroad.
By the late 1800s, Winslow became a popular resort town. Its pretty mountain peaks attracted many rich people from the Fort Smith area. They would come to Winslow for their summer vacations. The town officially became a city on February 17, 1905.

Education in Winslow
Winslow is part of the Greenland School District. Students from Winslow attend Greenland High School in Greenland.
For many years, Winslow had its own school system. It was called the Winslow School District. This district served the city and nearby rural areas. Usually, there were about 20-25 students in each grade from kindergarten to 12th grade.
The Winslow School District joined the Greenland School District on July 1, 2004. This happened because a state law said that school districts with fewer than 350 students had to combine. Winslow had 273 students at that time.
The high school, which taught grades 7-12, closed after the 2004–2005 school year. The last class to graduate in 2005 had 14 seniors. Winslow Elementary School, for grades K-6, stayed open for a while. But in November 2006, the Greenland School Board decided to close it too. This happened at the end of the 2006–2007 school year. The mascot for Winslow Public Schools was the Fighting Squirrels.
Many students from Winslow chose not to go to Greenland schools. Instead, they transferred to the West Fork school district. As of December 2022, people in Winslow are asking the Arkansas Department of Education to change Winslow's school district from Greenland to West Fork.
The old Winslow High School building now holds the Winslow Public Library. It also has the Friends of the Library Bookstore and an Internet Cafe.
