Winston Wiremu Reid (born 3 July 1988) is a former professional football player from New Zealand. He is best known for being a defender for the English club West Ham United. He also captained the New Zealand national team. Reid played for Midtjylland and had loan spells at Sporting Kansas City and Brentford.

Early Life and Football Start
Winston Reid's parents have Māori family roots. He was born in North Shore, Auckland. He started playing football at age four with a local club called Takapuna. When he was 10, Reid moved from New Zealand to Denmark with his mother and Danish stepfather. He always stayed in touch with his father and family in New Zealand.
Club Career Highlights
Playing for FC Midtjylland
Reid joined the youth team of SUB Sønderborg. In 2004, at 16, he moved to the academy of Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland. He was one of the first players to come through their new football academy. While in the youth system, Reid helped the U19 team win their first Danish championship.
In November 2005, Reid signed a professional contract with FC Midtjylland. He made his first team debut that same month when he was 17. He played his first league game on 27 November 2005. He played nine games in his first season.
Reid signed a new contract with Midtjylland in 2007, keeping him at the club until 2012. He became a regular player in the 2008–09 season. He scored his first goal for Midtjylland in a UEFA Cup match on 17 July 2008. He scored his first league goal on 23 March 2009. Overall, he played 29 games and scored three goals that season.
He continued to be a key player in the 2009–10 season. He played in the Danish Cup Final in May 2010, but FC Midtjylland lost the match. He played 32 games that season. After leaving Midtjylland, fans named Reid one of the club's "Best Eleven" players.
Time at West Ham United
Winston Reid joined West Ham United on 5 August 2010. He signed a three-year contract. He made his Premier League debut on 14 August in the first game of the season. After a few months, he started playing more regularly. He scored his first goal for West Ham in an FA Cup match on 21 February 2011. He dedicated this goal to the people affected by the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. In his first season, West Ham was relegated to the Championship.
For the 2011–12 season, Reid stayed with West Ham. He became a regular starter again. He scored his first league goal for West Ham on 28 August. He helped West Ham win the Football League play-offs at Wembley Stadium. This meant West Ham was promoted back to the Premier League. He played 33 games and scored three goals that season.
In the 2012–13 season, Reid chose to train with West Ham instead of playing for New Zealand in the London Olympics. He scored his first Premier League goal for West Ham on 1 September. He was named the club's Player of the Month in December. Reid captained West Ham for the first time in an FA Cup match. In May 2013, he signed a new contract until 2015. He was named "Hammer of the Year" for his great performance that season. He played 37 games and scored one goal.
Reid continued to play well in the 2013–14 season. He scored a goal against Tottenham Hotspur on 6 October 2013. He made his 100th appearance for West Ham on 15 April 2014. He played 22 games and scored once that season.
On 20 September 2014, Reid scored a goal just two minutes into a game against Liverpool. In March 2015, he signed a new six-and-a-half-year contract with West Ham. He played 33 games and scored one goal in his fifth season.

In the 2015–16 season, Reid played in the UEFA Europa League. He scored an own goal in a match against West Brom on 29 November. He became captain for a second time that season in an FA Cup match. On 10 May 2016, Reid scored the very last goal at West Ham's old stadium, Upton Park. This was a special moment for the club. He played 30 games and scored one goal that season.
For the 2016–17 season, Reid played in the Europa League Qualifying matches. He scored his first goal of the season on 22 October. He scored his second goal on 26 December. He often stepped in as captain when Mark Noble was not playing. He played 36 games and scored two goals that season.
Ahead of the 2017–18 season, Reid signed another contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2023. He suffered a groin injury in January 2018. In March, he was injured again during a game and was out for the rest of the season. He played 20 games that season.
Reid did not play at all during the 2018–19 season because he was recovering from a knee injury. He returned to play in a friendly match in July 2019. However, he suffered another knee injury that kept him out for three more months.
On 21 September 2021, West Ham announced that Reid had left the club by agreement.
Loan to Sporting Kansas City
On 14 February 2020, Reid joined Sporting Kansas City in the USA on loan. He said he was looking forward to a new challenge after his injuries. In December 2020, Sporting Kansas City decided not to sign him permanently, and he returned to West Ham.
Loan to Brentford
On 1 February 2021, Reid joined EFL Championship club Brentford on loan. He made his debut on 3 February, which was his first senior game in English football since 2018. He played in the play-off final, helping Brentford win and get promoted to the Premier League. Brentford's manager, Thomas Frank, praised Reid for being "a giant" in helping their promotion push.
International Career
Playing for Denmark
Reid became a Danish citizen in 2006. He then played for Denmark's youth national teams, including the under-19s and under-21s. He played in the 2009 European Under-21 Championship qualification tournament.
Playing for New Zealand
On 11 March 2010, Reid said he wanted to play for New Zealand's senior team. He was chosen for New Zealand's 2010 World Cup squad, even though the coach had never seen him play. He made his international debut in a friendly game against Australia in May 2010.
On 15 June 2010, Reid scored a goal in stoppage time against Slovakia in New Zealand's first game of the 2010 World Cup. This goal secured a draw and was New Zealand's first ever point in a World Cup finals match. He played two more games in the tournament before New Zealand was eliminated. Reid later said the World Cup changed his life.
In 2013, after Ryan Nelsen retired, Reid was named captain of the New Zealand team. His first game as captain was on 22 March 2013. He missed the World Cup playoff against Mexico later that year due to injury.
After a two-year break from the national team, Reid was called up again in November 2019. He played his first game in two years against Republic of Ireland. In July 2021, Reid was part of the New Zealand team at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
In August 2022, Reid announced he was retiring from international football. His final games were against Australia. He played his last match on 25 September 2022.
Personal Life
Winston Reid speaks both English and Danish. In July 2015, he became a father to twins, Ariana and Damien, with his wife, Yana.
In August 2015, Reid started a football scholarship at Scots College in New Zealand.
As of August 2022, Reid and his family live in Dubai.
