The Wintun are a group of Native American people who live in Northern California. They are made up of several related tribes, including the Wintu (in the north), the Nomlaki (in the middle), and the Patwin (in the south).

Their traditional lands stretch from near what is now Shasta Lake down to the San Francisco Bay. This area is along the western side of the Sacramento River and extends into the California Coast Ranges. Each of these tribes speaks one of the Wintuan languages.

Experts believe the Wintun people likely arrived in California around the year 500 AD. They probably came from what is now southern Oregon. When they arrived, they brought new technology, like the bow and arrow, to the region.
