The Story of Wishart's Past
Wishart got its official name on August 1, 1967. Before that, it was sometimes known as Mount Gravatt South. The suburb was named after the Wishart family, who were among the first settlers in this area.
How Wishart Grew
Newnham Road, a street in Wishart, used to be part of a special path called a stock route. This route was used to move farm animals from areas south of Brisbane to the markets in Cannon Hill. Over time, the land along Newnham Road was divided into smaller farms. This made the stock route narrower, turning it into a regular road. Animals still used it occasionally until the 1960s. As Brisbane grew bigger, Wishart was divided into blocks for houses, becoming the residential area we see today.
