Exploring Mount Gravatt East's Landscape
Mount Gravatt East is found about 8 kilometres (5 miles) southeast of Brisbane's city centre. It's a place with different types of hills.
One of these hills is Mount Thompson. It stands about 190 metres (623 feet) above sea level.
There's also an old quarry along Pine Mountain Road. This quarry has filled with water over time. Even though it's fenced off for safety, some people have tried to use it for swimming. However, a report from the Brisbane City Council found that the water is not safe for swimming. It has a very low pH level, which means it's quite acidic, and it contains traces of metals.
A Glimpse into History
Mount Gravatt East officially became a suburb in 1967. Its name comes from a nearby landmark called Mount Gravatt. This mountain was named in 1840 by a surveyor named Robert Dixon. He named it after Lieutenant George Gravatt, who was in charge of the Moreton Bay penal colony for a short time in 1839.
In 1891, a property known as the Blantyre estate was sold. Twelve smaller pieces of land were put up for sale. These were located at the corner of Cavendish Road and Creek Road.
Creek Road State School first opened its doors on August 29, 1955. In January 1956, its name was changed to Mount Gravatt East State School.
Seton College, a Catholic school, was started on February 3, 1964. It was founded by the Daughters of Charity of St Elizabeth Ann Seton.
St Marks Lutheran Primary School opened on January 23, 2006. However, this school has since closed down.
