Wivenhoe Pocket is a small, quiet area in the countryside of Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Somerset Region. In 2021, about 417 people lived here, making it a close-knit community.
A Look Back: Wivenhoe Pocket's History
Wivenhoe Pocket got its name from a very old pastoral run. A pastoral run was a large area of land used for raising animals like sheep or cattle. This particular run was managed by a person named Edmund Blucher Uhr.
He decided to name this big land area after a town called Wivenhoe in Essex, England. It's interesting how places in Australia sometimes get their names from places far away!
Land for Everyone
Later, in 1877, a large part of the Wivenhoe pastoral run became available for people to settle. About 5,500 acres (which is a huge amount of land!) were opened up. This meant that people could apply to get a piece of land to live on and farm. This happened on April 19, 1877, helping the area grow.
