The Brisbane River Baptist Church, also known as Vernor German Baptist Church, opened on 5 September 1873. It was a timber church that could seat 100 people. The church closed in 1920. Today, a special plaque marks where it used to be.

Next to the church was the Vernor German Baptist Cemetery. It was started in 1876 and was used until 1954. Many early settlers were buried there.

The Old Railway Line

The first part of the Brisbane Valley railway line opened in 1884. Vernor had its own railway station as one of the stops. This part of the railway line closed in 1993. Now, the old railway path is a walking and cycling trail called the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. The Vernor railway station no longer exists.

The Great Flood of 1893

In 1893, a huge flood hit Brisbane and the surrounding areas. The Vernor family lived near the river. They had managed fine in a flood a few years earlier, so they weren't too worried at first. But the water kept rising very quickly.

Mr. Vernor rowed his family and others in his household to their stables. They hoped to be safe in the stable's loft. However, the floodwaters rose even higher. They had to leave the stable and try to tie their boat to a strong tree. But the flood was too powerful. Their boat was swept away down the river.

It crashed into the top branches of a gum tree. Everyone struggled in the water, but some managed to climb onto the tree. As the water rose, they climbed higher and higher into the branches. They even tore their clothes to make ropes to help them climb. They spent almost a day and a half stuck in the very top of the tree. Finally, their neighbours were able to rescue them in a boat.
