History of Fairney View
Fairney View got its name from a large farm called Fairney Lawn. This farm was run by Joseph North way back in 1841. The name was also used for a railway station that opened in 1884. This station was on the Brisbane Valley railway line, which is now closed.
Records from the Queensland Railways Department tell us what "Fairney View" means. It means "view of ferns." This suggests the area once had many ferns.
The Old Lutheran Church
In June 1872, a German Lutheran Church opened in Fairney View. It was built near a bridge over Fairney Brook. This area was quite low, and the church was flooded badly two times. In 1893, the water was over 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) above the building! Another time, the water reached the roof.
Because of the floods, the church was moved. On September 5, 1903, St Peter's Lutheran Church reopened in a new spot. This new location was higher up and safer from floods. However, the old building was quite old, so many parts had to be replaced. Today, the church building is no longer used as a church. It has been changed into a private home.
Fairney View's School Days
Fairney View once had its own school. Plans for building a school were announced in October 1895. Fairney View Provisional School opened on January 20, 1896. Miss Harris was the first teacher.
The school became Fairney View State School on January 1, 1909. It taught children in the area for many years. However, the school eventually closed its doors in 1967. The old school building was located on Randalls Road.
