Wollstonecraft (pronounced wool-stən-kraft) is a lovely suburb right by the water in Sydney, Australia. It's located on the lower North Shore, about 4 kilometres north of the main city centre of Sydney. It's part of the North Sydney Council area.

History of Wollstonecraft

Wollstonecraft got its name from Edward Wollstonecraft. He was the first European settler to receive a large piece of land here in 1821. His land grant was about 200 hectares (500 acres).

Edward Wollstonecraft came from England to find success for himself and his sister. He also wanted to get away from the fame of his aunt, Mary Wollstonecraft. She was a famous writer who wrote a very important book called A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. This book talked about women's rights and equality.

Another important person in the area was Alexander Berry. He was Edward Wollstonecraft's business partner. Berry Island, a beautiful spot by the harbour in Wollstonecraft, is named after him.

The suburb has many old and beautiful buildings. You can see grand Victorian and Federation style houses. These buildings show the rich history of the area.

Before European settlement, this land belonged to the Cammeraygal people. They are part of the Eora nation, the traditional owners of this land.

In 2019, Wollstonecraft was ranked as one of the best suburbs to live in Sydney. It was the 6th most liveable out of 569 suburbs.
