WondaGurl's Early Life and Musical Start
Ebony Naomi Oshunrinde was born on December 28, 1996, in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada. She lived in different places like North York and Mississauga before her family settled in Brampton, Ontario.
WondaGurl started making music at a very young age. When she was just nine years old, she began producing beats using a keyboard with drum pads. Her grandmother also gave her a Casio keyboard, which helped her love for music grow even more.
Around the age of 11 or 12, WondaGurl discovered a music software called Fruity Loops. This was a big moment for her, as it allowed her to start making beats more seriously. Her family also influenced her musical tastes. Her mother introduced her to artists like Biggie Smalls and P. Diddy. Her brother showed her Dipset and other hip hop artists.
WondaGurl got her unique name from her mentor, a famous Canadian producer named Boi-1da. She said, "I got my name from his name, I just switched it around."
WondaGurl's Amazing Career Journey
WondaGurl's career took off when she was still a teenager.
Winning Beat Maker Competitions
When she was 15, WondaGurl entered the "Battle of The Beat Makers" competition in Toronto. She competed in both 2011 and 2012. Boi-1da, who later became her mentor, was one of the judges. In 2012, she won first place! This win earned her a trophy and a special music synthesizer.
Working with Top Artists
After winning the competition, WondaGurl became a student of Boi-1da. Around 2013, when she was only 16, she started working closely with American rapper Travis Scott. Years later, she even signed him to her own company.
That same year, she got one of her first big breaks. She worked on a song called "Crown" for Jay-Z's album Magna Carta Holy Grail. She collaborated with Travis Scott and producer Mike Dean on this track. This success opened doors for her to work with many other major artists and producers.
In 2015, she produced her first Top 40 hit single called "Antidote" by Travis Scott. She co-produced this song with another Canadian producer, Eestbound. WondaGurl then signed Eestbound to a production deal, making him her first co-producer. Their partnership ended around 2016.
Recognition and Awards
WondaGurl's talent has been widely recognized. In 2018, she was featured in the Music category of Forbes 30 Under 30. This list highlights young people who are making a big impact in their fields. She is also one of the youngest women to produce music for a platinum-selling hip hop album. A platinum album means it has sold over one million copies!
In July 2020, WondaGurl signed a major deal with Travis Scott's Cactus Jack Publishing and Sony/ATV Music Publishing. This deal was made along with her own music company, Wonderchild Music.
At the Juno Awards of 2021, WondaGurl won the Jack Richardson Producer of the Year Award. She received this award for her work on songs like "Aim for the Moon" by Pop Smoke and "Gang Gang" by JackBoys and Sheck Wes. This was a historic win!
