Where is Wonglepong?

Wonglepong is in a valley. This valley is near where Canungra Creek flows into the Albert River. The main road, Beaudesert Nerang Road, runs through the lowest parts of the valley. To the east, the land rises steeply towards the Tamborine Mountain plateau.

A Look at History

The name Wonglepong comes from the local railway station, which got its name in 1927. Before that, it was called Sarah Vale. People think Wonglepong is an Aboriginal name. It might mean "forgotten sound" or refer to something special about Mount Tamborine. You might also see it spelled as Wangalpong.

Early Settlers and the Cemetery

The Franklin family started a farm called Sarahvale in 1875. They had a private cemetery on their land. In 1914, Ann Ford Franklin gave one acre of land, including their cemetery, to the local council. This land was then used as a public cemetery. It has been known by several names, including Sarahvale Cemetery and Wonglepong Cemetery.

Schools in Wonglepong

A school called Caningera Provisional School first opened in 1884. It closed and reopened a few times. In 1909, it became Canungera Lower State School. Later, in 1915, its name changed to Wangalpong State School. Finally, in 1928, it was renamed Wonglepong State School. The school closed its doors in 1935. Today, a plaque in Henry Franklin Family Park marks where the school used to be.

The Methodist Church

The Wonglepong Methodist Church opened in 1906. It was built by the Caswell family. By 1953, the nearby town of Canungra had grown bigger than Wonglepong. Since Canungra didn't have a Methodist church, the Wonglepong church was taken apart. Its wood and parts were used to build a new church in Canungra, which opened in 1954.

The Railway Station

Wonglepong also had a railway station. It was part of the Canungra railway line. This train line operated from 1915 until 1955.

The QCWA Hall

The Wonglepong branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) started in 1925. Ann Franklin, from the Franklin family, founded it. For the first eight years, meetings were held at her home. Later, the Franklin family gave land and timber to build a special hall for the group. Ann Franklin's son, who was a carpenter, helped build the hall with volunteers. The hall officially opened on December 4, 1935. It even had a library! In 2015, the branch celebrated its 90th anniversary, and the hall celebrated its 80th birthday.
