Woodbine's History: How the City Began

For thousands of years, the land that is now Kansas was home to Native American tribes. In 1803, the United States bought most of modern Kansas as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Kansas became a U.S. territory in 1854. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state. Dickinson County was created in 1857.
Founding and Naming Woodbine
The city was first called Lyons when it was founded in 1871. James Allen Gillett Sr. named it after a nearby creek. The first post office opened in January 1872.
In 1887, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built tracks through the area. On July 16, 1887, Lyons was renamed Woodbine. Gillett chose this name because it was the same as his old hometown, Woodbine, Illinois.
