Woodburn is a small town in New South Wales, Australia. It sits on the banks of the Richmond River. For a long time, the busy Pacific Highway went right through the middle of town. This changed in September 2020 when a new road was built around Woodburn.
The town is about 712 kilometers (442 miles) north of Sydney, which is the capital city of New South Wales. It is also 34 kilometers (21 miles) south of the larger city of Lismore.
Before European settlers arrived in the 1840s, the area was home to the Bundjalung people. They called this place Maniworkan. Woodburn used to be an important river port. This meant boats would stop here to load and unload goods. However, as river travel became less common, the town's importance as a port also decreased.
Today, sugar cane fields surround Woodburn. The town is part of the Richmond Valley Shire. The main office for this area is in Casino. In February 2022, Woodburn experienced a major flood. The nearby tourist town of Evans Head is only 10 kilometers (6 miles) away.

Exploring Woodburn's Geography
Land and Rivers
Woodburn is located in a river valley. This means the land is quite flat and low, usually about 6 meters (20 feet) above sea level. To the east, you'll find coastal wetlands. To the south, there are small hills called knolls.
The Richmond River flows right through the center of Woodburn. Many important buildings are built near the river. The river then continues to Broadwater before reaching the ocean at Ballina. Another waterway, Rocky Mouth Creek, joins the Richmond River from the south of town. The Tuckombil Canal connects Rocky Mouth Creek to the Evans River. The Evans River flows out to the ocean at Evans Head.
Weather Patterns
Woodburn has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has warm summers and mild winters. The weather here can change a lot from year to year. This is often due to something called the El Niño–Southern Oscillation.
During 'El Niño' events, the area might experience droughts and bushfires. During 'La Niña' events, there is usually more rain and a higher chance of floods. Because Woodburn is close to the ocean, the temperatures are not usually too extreme.
