Woodcroft is a suburb in Adelaide, South Australia. It's about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Adelaide's main city area. Woodcroft has clear borders: Reynell Road to the north, Bains Road to the south, Panalatinga Road to the west, and the Hills Face Zone to the east. The Panalatinga Creek also flows through this suburb.
History of Woodcroft
The first European settlers arrived in 1869. Robert Wright and his wife Mary built a small house from limestone and mud. This was on about 20 acres of land, a few kilometers east of John Reynell's settlement at Reynella.
Later, in 1897, a winemaker named Richard Mostyn Owen started his Mount Hurtle winery. He also built a large house called Woodcroft Farm. The suburb of Woodcroft got its name from this farm.
Today, you can still find parts of Wright's old house in a small park named after him. Mount Hurtle is still a small winery. However, both the Wright family's land and Mount Hurtle winery were sold in the 1970s. The area was then divided into many smaller blocks for new houses.
In 2007, a caravan park called The Vines closed down. A retirement village was built in its place. Another caravan park, Woodcroft Park, is still open on Bains Road.
