SNIBSTON woodland
A sunny woodland path.

A woodland is like a forest, but with more space between the trees. This means lots of sunlight can reach the ground. Because of this sunlight, woodlands have many different kinds of plants growing below the trees. You'll often find shrubs, grasses, and other small plants there.

Woodlands are an "open habitat." This means they are not as dense as a thick forest. If the area gets drier, woodlands can slowly turn into shrubland, which has even fewer trees. If trees grow very close together and block out most of the sun, that's usually called a forest.

In the United Kingdom, "woodland" can mean any smaller area with trees, no matter how dense. A "forest" in the UK usually means a very large area of trees. Sometimes, old "Royal forests" might not even have many trees today! There's also a special term, "ancient woodland," which means a wooded area that has been around for a very long time.

People who work to protect nature, called conservationists, try hard to save woodlands. For example, some woodlands in Northwest Indiana are now part of the Indiana Dunes. This helps keep them safe for the future.

Different Types of Woodlands

Woodlands are found all over the world. Scientists group them into different "ecoregions" based on their climate and the types of plants and animals that live there. Let's look at some main types.

Warm Woodlands (Tropical and Subtropical)

These woodlands are found in warm parts of the world, closer to the equator. They often have a mix of trees and grasses.

  • African Woodlands: Many woodlands in Africa, like the Miombo and Mopane woodlands, are found in places like Angola, Malawi, and Zambia. They are home to many unique animals.
  • South American Woodlands: The Cerrado in Brazil is a famous example. It's a huge area with woodlands and savannas, full of different plants and animals.

Woodlands in Cooler Climates (Temperate)

These woodlands are found in areas with four distinct seasons, like parts of North America and Australia.

  • Australian Woodlands: In Australia, you can find "dry sclerophyll" woodlands. These have tough, leathery-leaved trees like eucalyptus that can handle dry conditions. Examples include the Cumberland Plain Woodland near Sydney.
  • North American Woodlands: In places like Illinois, you can see open woodlands with a mix of trees and many wildflowers and grasses growing underneath.

Mountain Woodlands (Montane)

These woodlands are found high up in mountains. The trees here are often adapted to cooler temperatures and rocky soil.

  • African Mountain Woodlands: The Drakensberg mountains in Southern Africa have beautiful montane grasslands and woodlands.
  • North American Mountain Woodlands: In the western United States, you might find "Pinyon-Juniper" woodlands. These have small pine trees and juniper trees that can grow in dry, high-altitude areas.

Mediterranean Woodlands

These woodlands are found in areas with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. They are common around the Mediterranean Sea and in places like California and parts of Australia.

  • Australian Mediterranean Woodlands: Areas like the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia have woodlands with unique eucalyptus and melaleuca trees.
  • Middle Eastern Woodlands: In countries like Lebanon, you can find beautiful cedar woodlands. These trees are very old and famous.
  • Californian Woodlands: California has "chaparral and woodlands" with tough shrubs and trees that can survive wildfires and dry spells.

Dry Woodlands (Deserts and Xeric)

Even in very dry areas, some woodlands can exist. The trees here are specially adapted to survive with very little water.

  • African Dry Woodlands: The Sahel region in Africa, which is south of the Sahara Desert, has dry woodlands. Trees here are spread out and can handle the harsh conditions.
  • Middle Eastern Dry Woodlands: In places like Yemen and Saudi Arabia, you can find "xeric" woodlands. "Xeric" means they are adapted to very dry conditions.
