The Famous Woodlawn Race Course
The area where Woodlawn Park now stands was once home to the Woodlawn Race Course. This race track opened in 1859. It quickly became very famous across the country.
However, the race course closed after the Civil War. This was a big war in the United States from 1861 to 1865.
The Story of the Woodlawn Vase
A well-known horse breeder named R. A. Alexander played a key role. He bought the land for the National Racing Association. He even hired Tiffany's, a famous jewelry company, to design a special trophy.
This trophy was called the Woodlawn Vase. It was used in 1861 and 1862. During the Civil War, the vase was buried to keep it safe. Today, the original Woodlawn Vase is the winner's trophy at the Preakness Stakes. This is one of the biggest horse races in the U.S. A copy of the vase is given to the winner each year.
