Woodmoor is a friendly neighborhood located in the northern part of Silver Spring, Maryland. It's in Montgomery County, in the state of Maryland. Woodmoor is bordered by U.S. 29 on the west, Northwest Branch Park to the north, the Capital Beltway (which is I-95) to the east, and University Boulevard to the south. It's also part of an area known as "Four Corners," right where Colesville Road (U.S. 29) and University Boulevard (Maryland 193) meet.

Woodmoor's History

The very first homes in the Woodmoor neighborhood were built in the late 1930s.

A Popular Deli

In the 1950s, a special restaurant and bakery called "Sid Mandell's Restaurant & Deli" opened in the Four Corners area. This deli served kosher food, which means it followed Jewish dietary laws. It was owned by Sidney "Sid" Mandell. The deli was a very popular spot and a well-known part of the community. It was open every day of the week. Sid Mandell retired in 1980, and the deli closed. Today, the building where the deli once stood is home to an urgent care center called Righttime Medical Care.

Working Towards Fairness

For many years, until 1968, some neighborhoods, including Woodmoor, had rules that prevented African-Americans and other people of color from living there. These rules were called "racially restrictive covenants." In 2020, people living in Woodmoor, along with activists, started working to remove this old, unfair language from property records, one by one. This effort helps make sure everyone feels welcome in the neighborhood.

Community Life and Culture

Woodmoor is known for its winding streets and many old, beautiful trees. These features give the neighborhood a special look and feel.

Schools and Events

Pinecrest Elementary School is located right in the neighborhood. Montgomery Blair High School is also very close, just across University Street. The community enjoys several fun events throughout the year. These include a Christmas tree lighting and a Menorah lighting during the holidays. There's also a local Oktoberfest celebration, an annual Pride Parade, and a music festival called WOODMOORstock.

Getting Around Woodmoor

Woodmoor has good options for public transportation, making it easier for people to travel.

Public Transport Options

You can use the Washington Metro train service. The Red Line has stations nearby at Wheaton and Silver Spring. Woodmoor is also served by several bus lines. These include Metrobus numbers Z6, Z8, C2, and C4. The Ride On bus number 9 also serves the area.

Future Transit Plans

A new train line, the Purple Line, is being built. The Piney Branch Road station for the Purple Line will be located nearby in Long Branch. It will be at the intersection of University Boulevard and Piney Branch Road. This new station is expected to open to the public around 2022.

A Unique Bus Stop

The neighborhood also has a bus stop that was once called the "Sorriest Bus Stop in America." This was based on a survey done by Streetsblog. The bus stop is located where Route 29 and Crestmoor Drive meet.
