Woodstock is a small country town and area in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the City of Townsville. In 2021, about 270 people lived in Woodstock.

Where is Woodstock?

Woodstock is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Townsville. It sits in an important area where water collects for the Ross River.

Water for Townsville

The Ross River Dam is a very important place nearby. It provides a lot of the water for Townsville. It also supplies water to the areas of Majors Creek and Upper Haughton.

Power Supply

There is a special power station in Woodstock. It helps to boost electricity to the local area. This power then goes to the Kelso power station in Townsville.

A Look Back in Time

Woodstock got its name from a large farm called the Woodstock pastoral run. This farm was named in 1863 by Mark Watt Reid. He was the manager for a farmer named John Melton Black.

School Days

The first school in Woodstock opened in September 1890. It was called Woodstock Provisional School. In 1909, it became Woodstock State School. Sadly, the preschool building burned down around Christmas in 2004. In 2015, the school celebrated its 125th birthday!

Changing Borders

For a long time, Woodstock was part of a different local government area called Thuringowa. But in 1997, the local government boundaries changed. Woodstock then became part of the City of Townsville.

Woodstock has a main local shop called the Woodstock General Store. This store is very useful! It works as a cafe, a news agent, a gas station, a bank, and a post office. There is also another gas station in the nearby area of Calcium.

Community Fun

The Woodstock branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) meets at their hall. This hall is at 42 Woodstock Avenue. The QCWA Hall is a busy place! It is used for many community events. These include markets, bingo games, and parties.

Learning in Woodstock

Woodstock State School is a primary school for children from Prep to Year 6. It is a government school for both boys and girls. The school is located on Woodstock Avenue. In 2017, about 60 students attended the school.

There are events like Woodstock Horse Sports. There is also a Motocross and off-road track. This motocross track holds events almost every weekend. It is very well known across Queensland.

Woodstock's main area is on the Flinders Highway. This is where the Woodstock-Giru Road meets the main highway.
