Where is Majors Creek?

Majors Creek is located on a flat plain. This plain sits just south of a large mountain called Mount Elliot. The area has natural boundaries. The Haughton River forms its eastern edge. Major Creek runs along its southern side. An unnamed creek marks its western border.

Most of Majors Creek is fairly low. It's usually about 30 to 50 meters (around 100 to 160 feet) above sea level. However, there are also some interesting hills in the area:

  • Major Creek Mountain is in the eastern part. It stands tall at 295 meters (about 968 feet).
  • Artillery Hill is located in the middle of the area. It reaches 215 meters (about 705 feet) high.
  • South Double is also found in the center. It's 140 meters (about 459 feet) tall.

A Glimpse into the Past

Majors Creek used to have its own school! Major's Creek State School first opened its doors on 9 February 1934. It taught students for many years.

However, in 2008, the school had very few students. Because of this, it was put on hold, or "mothballed," on 31 December 2008. The school officially closed on 31 December 2009.

In 2012, the school's land and buildings were going to be sold. Before the sale, a special reunion was held. People gathered to dig up a time capsule that had been buried in 1984. This capsule was part of the school's 50th anniversary celebration. The old school was located at 54 Majors Creek Road. It was sold in May 2012 for $264,000.
