Worth is a small town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 231 people lived there. The town is named after William Worth, a military leader during the Battle of Sackett's Harbor.

Worth is located in the southeastern part of Jefferson County. It is south of the city of Watertown.

Worth's History

People first started settling in Worth around 1802. However, it was hard to build a successful community. The War of 1812 also caused some people to leave the town.

Worth was officially created in 1848. It was formed by separating from the town of Lorraine. There was an earlier plan to create the town, but the War of 1812 stopped it.

The town had its largest population in 1900, with 2,895 people.

Geography of Worth

Worth is located on the northwest side of the Tug Hill Plateau. The United States Census Bureau says the town covers a total area of about 112.2 square kilometers (43.3 square miles). Most of this area, about 111.9 square kilometers (43.2 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.2 square kilometers (0.08 square miles), is water.

The southern border of Worth touches Oswego County. The eastern border, and part of the northern border, touches Lewis County.
