Lorraine is a small town located in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 1,037 people lived there. This was an increase from 930 people in the year 2000. The town got its name from Lorraine, a region found in France.

Lorraine is situated on the southern edge of Jefferson County. It is also south of the city of Watertown.

History of Lorraine

People first started settling in the area around 1802. Back then, this place was originally known as "Atticus."

The town of Lorraine was officially formed in 1804. It was created from a part of the town of Mexico, which was in Oswego County. When it was first formed, the new town was called "Malta." However, its name was changed to "Lorraine" in 1808. This change happened to avoid confusion with another town named Malta in Saratoga County.

Later, in 1848, a section of Lorraine was used to create a new town called Worth.

Geography of Lorraine

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Lorraine covers a total area of about 101 square kilometers (39 square miles). Only a very small part of this area, about 0.05 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water.

The southern border of the town is also the border of Oswego County.

An important stream called South Sandy Creek flows through the northern part of Lorraine.
