Wu Jingyu (simplified Chinese: 吴静钰; traditional Chinese: 吳靜鈺; pinyin: Wú Jìngyù; born February 1, 1987) is a famous Chinese Taekwondo athlete. She won gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in the –49 kg weight class. She also earned many medals at world championships and Asian Games.

Early Life and Interests
Wu Jingyu started learning taekwondo when she was 13 years old. Her special moves include powerful axe kicks. She studied at Tianjin University of Technology and Suzhou University of Science and Technology. Wu Jingyu enjoys music, movies, and drawing sayings on porcelain. Her hometown, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province, is famous for its porcelain. Her uncle is even a porcelain maker. She once acted in a Chinese movie about taekwondo, playing a young fan who dreamed of becoming a champion.

Wu Jingyu has had a very successful career in taekwondo, winning many important competitions.
Early Wins
In 2006, Wu Jingyu won China's first International Open in the 47kg category. She beat Wang Ying, a world champion who was much taller than her. Later that year, she won the National Championship in the 51kg category. In December 2006, at the Asian Games in Doha, she won her first international championship. She defeated Yang Shujun from Chinese Taipei, earning China's first-ever taekwondo gold medal at the Asian Games.
World Champion Titles
In 2007, Wu Jingyu won the 47kg final at the National World Championships. She also won the 47kg championship at the Beijing World Championships that same year.
Olympic Gold Medals
In 2008, she won the 49kg category at the Good Luck Beijing International Invitational Tournament. She also won the 51kg category at the National Taekwondo Championships. On August 9, 2012, Wu Jingyu won her second Olympic gold medal at the London Olympics. In the women's 49kg final, she easily beat Spanish player Jager with a score of 8-1. This win meant she kept her championship title in this event.
More International Success
In 2009, she earned third place in the 49kg category at the Copenhagen World Championships. In 2010, she won third place in the women's 49 kg taekwondo category at the first World Martial Arts Games in Beijing. On November 17, she won the 49kg taekwondo final at the Guangzhou Asian Games. She easily defeated her Japanese opponent to take the championship. In December, she won the 53kg championship at the "Glory Walk" Adidas Cup Taekwondo National Championship.
Return to Competition
After taking a break, Wu Jingyu returned to taekwondo in 2019. On February 3, 2019, she won the women's under 53 kg final at the World Taekwondo Federation Fujairah Open. She beat her teammate Liu Kaiqi with a score of 26:2 in her first competition back. On April 28, 2019, she won the women's under-49 kg final at the 2019 World Taekwondo Grand Slam Championship Series Spring Qualifiers. She defeated South Korean player Jiang Baola. On October 21, 2019, Wu Jingyu won the women's 49kg final at the 2019 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Sofia Station. She beat Rio Olympic champion Kim So-hee of South Korea. This was her first World Taekwondo Grand Prix win in four years. In December 2019, she earned runner-up at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Finals in Moscow, Russia, and at the World Taekwondo Grand Slam Championship Series in Wuxi, Jiangsu.
Recent Activities
Wu Jingyu was chosen to be part of the Chinese Sports Delegation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 14, 2021. At the Tokyo Olympics on July 24, she lost in the quarter-finals of the women's 49kg taekwondo category. She then lost in the rematch, missing a chance for her third Olympic medal. On February 3, 2022, Wu Jingyu was a torchbearer for the Beijing Winter Olympics. She took part in the torch relay at Badaling Great Wall. On June 25, 2023, Wu Jingyu won third place in the "Virtual Taekwondo" event at the first Olympic e-sports week in Singapore. This was the first medal for the Chinese team in Olympic esports history. On June 30, 2023, she was elected as a co-chairman of the World Taekwondo Athletes Committee. In September, she served as an arbitration committee member at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou.
