About the Xestia wockei Moth
This moth is found in very cold places. It lives in Siberia, which is a large part of Russia. You can also find it in northern North America. This includes parts of Canada like Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.
Different Kinds of Xestia wockei
Sometimes, animals of the same species can look a little different depending on where they live. These slight differences create what we call subspecies. The Xestia wockei moth has a few known subspecies:
- Xestia wockei wockei
- Xestia wockei troubridgei
- Xestia wockei aldani
- Xestia wockei tundrana
The Xestia wockei tundrana subspecies lives in specific mountain areas. These include the South Siberian Mountains and the Central Yakutian Lowland. It also lives in the mountains of north-eastern Siberia.
For a long time, another moth called Xestia scropulana was thought to be the same as Xestia wockei. However, scientists now believe they are two separate species. They have small differences that make them unique.
